Marlboro’s Kenningham leads All-District Volleyball Team
I n a season that went above expectations, the Marlboro High School girls volleyball team put together another championship run.  Led by Grace Kenningham, the Mustangs regained the Shore Conference A North Division title, sharing it with rival Wall High School. The Mustangs reached the Shore Conference Tournament finals, where they lost a dramatic three-setter to St. John Vianney High School after holding set points in the second set. Along the way, they settled a score with Wall by beating the top seed in the semifinals, 2-0.  Marlboro reached the second round of the state playoffs and won 20 matches (20-7).  “This season was amazing,” head coach Margie McNamara said. “I’m so excited about what we did.”
While Marlboro was the head of the class, Colts Neck High School and Freehold High School both fielded postseason tournament teams. Both qualified for the Shore Conference and the state tournaments. The Cougars were 14-11, and the Colonials went 11-9.
Kenningham and teammates Teresa Dinh and Brianna Scotti head the News Transcript’s 2014 All-Freehold Regional High School District Girls Volleyball Team.  Completing the team are Freehold’s Rebecca Cobb and Sara Weiss and Colts Neck’s Shannon Tice and Molly Jackson.
Kenningham is the dominant player in the area and one of the Shore’s very best. Her stats alone make her case: 276 kills, 12 blocks, 79 digs and 23 service aces. A powerful hitter from anywhere on the court, the junior made everyone around her better. “She’s the core of the team,” McNamara said of her standout. “She’s our first option. She can hit anything.”  The stats and her powerful play at the net are only part of what Kenningham brought to the Mustangs. She took over the leadership role on the team and helped turn the Mustangs into a cohesive unit. Volleyball is her top sport, and she brings a dedication that all can see as she leads by example. Everyone followed her lead and worked on becoming better players.  Dinh’s passing as the team’s setter helped Kenningham and her teammates control play at the net. She had 307 assists on the season and 27 digs. Her 34 aces were tops on a team, which utilizes the service game as a major weapon. With Dinh being a junior like Kenningham, Marlboro has a very solid core for 2015.  Defensive specialist Scotti kept plays alive with her 137 digs. The senior also contributed 18 kills and 16 assists. She was second on the team in aces, serving up 26.

Cobb was a difference-maker for the Colonials at the net. The senior middle hitter had 120 kills, 11 blocks and 22 digs in helping make Freehold a tournament team. She was second on the team in aces with 32.

Weiss set things up for Cobb with her 221 assists. She also led the team in digs (60) and aces (33). She’s a junior.

Tice made her senior year memorable, leading the Cougars with 267 kills and had 173 digs. She also served up 70 aces.  Jackson, another senior, had a big year at the net with 84 kills and 189 digs, along with a team-high 96 aces.
